Schnappi Lyrics
As requested, here is my hack at translating the Schnappi lyrics. Reading them in German proved to me that my listening comprehension of the German spoken word gets a grade of “F”. I thought Schnappi sings that he eats an egg but what he actually means is that he began his life in an egg. Also, snapping at people is his favorite thing, not taking a nap as I previously thought. Schnappi is also quite a little jerk according to the song lyrics.
Anyway, “schnappen” in German appears to mean “snatch”. Taken literally, the song sounds even sillier than it already is. Why would a crocodile want to snatch at anyone instead of biting, chomping, or snapping at them? But I think it is intended as sort of a play on words because “schnap” sounds to me like the noise you hear when someone or something, such as a baby reptile or a typical 2 year old child, bites, chomps, or snaps. Thus the Americanized pronunciation of “Snappi” is actually quite on target with what I think the German songwriter intended (thanks for sharing, Andi).
To avoid repetition, the “Schni Schna Schnappi” seems to be just nonsense, sort of like saying “Snip, snap, Snappi”.

For the record, translation is very difficult. The phrase “lost in translation” is quite true. When I try to translate, I attempt to stick to the original meaning as much as possible while adjusting here and there for grammar. German is often an interesting translation because the verb usually comes at the end of the sentence, but in English it would come at the beginning of a sentence.
German Person, if you come back please be so kind as to post the actual lyrics along with any further commentary.

I think it’s great that this person is at least trying to help us out and put up translated lyrics, as for those ‘German people’, besides Erin, who are saying that the lyrics are completely wrong, why not actually CORRECT them. Like, say what the real ones are instead of just saying they are wrong. And for those for don’t like Schnappi, why did you even bother commenting?

Regardless of whether or not Schnappi sucks (personally, I think it’s quite cute), you have to admit that a song sung by a small child about a bratty baby crocodile that makes it to #1 on German pop charts is amusing. Seriously, if anyone has a better translation or knows what the additional lyrics are, please post them. None of the Schnappi renditions I’ve heard mention the additional lyrics that some folks say are missing. Cheers.

This has to be the worst piece of shit ever recorded. It just shows how many tools and fags there are in the world for this song to be so successful. You should hear some of the nonsense songs that my children in Australia have been taught at daycare, preschool and school!! it is all about fun. Blood, sweat and tears might produce some great music but it is generally gloomy and I think the world needs something that is just pure FUN, if it makes you sing, jump around, hum while doing the housework it cannot be that bad.

First i’d like to say Fluffy you did a pretty good job. I’ve been learning German for 11 years and i know that translating isn’t always easy. The mistakes you make were very easy to make but most of it was pretty good.
Kym the lyrics you put up were pretty good but still have some mistakes. I’ve translated the song as well as i can plus had some help from other sources.

Thanks Bushy. For the record, I merely posted my attempt at a lyrics translation in response to a pal’s request. Hopefully one of these days a real German will post a translation rather than squawking at my version. I suppose they are simply bitter at the large ex-pat community here enjoying this beautiful country without paying into their ridiculous taxation system.

hey “lol” I just thought i would let you know that online translators do not work. As a multi lingual person myself i can tell you that 90% of the time what they come up with simply does not make any sense. Unless two languages share the same structure and meanings to words ‘direct translation’ which is what online translators do, comes up with a heap of BS… Also, this song is german, not dutch.
Translating one language directly to another can turn a sentence like
“I am not sick, i do not need to visit the doctor”
into…
“I not to sick to not I not to need to not to not to visit to not doctor”
which…. not to make not sense.
It all depends on how similar the languages are, sometimes its near impossible to make sense of what is said, or, in some cases, it will just come up with something completely wrong like “I am hungry” into “everyone likes eating”…

Sure, MBCBUYB, go ahead and link the post. My translation isn’t perfect (perhaps you noticed the long trail of hatemail) as I based my translation off of language skills I picked up while living in Germany, but it’s a good start.
