I wanted a set of 3 small pyramids as a crappy little souveneir. A small shop in Aswan had a set that was good enough and after some hard bargaining, we agreed on a price of $5. However, as he was wrapping them up, my best friend noticed that one of the pyramids was dented. The shopkeeper kind of popped the dented panel back out, and I realized they were hollow and barely held together. I then began pulling out my $1 bills but only found 4. I told the shopkeeper and he almost shouted "This is a very serious problem!", amongst other things. I wasn't appreciative of his behavior, so the 4 of us left and he shouted "I hope you all die!" as we left. Apparently, renigging on an agreement is a cultural faux pas and he probably thought I did so because the merchandise was shoddy. Funny enough, several days later I found the last $1 bill shoved in the bottom of my purse. Sometimes it takes us 5 minutes to get a single point across, and talking on the phone is indeed a challenge (bringing a dictionary along on a date is new for me as well), but all in all it is really kind of fun.
